In 2015 I had the opportunity of photographing Ada Lee on her 90th birthday. Bright and bubbly, her vivacious personality and beautiful smile radiated throughout the day. With Chinese New Year just around the corner, here's a shout out to this beautiful pioneering woman. This year at 91 she is one of the oldest surviving native-born Chinese Americans, born and raised in Los Angeles. As one of the original members of the Los Angeles Mei-Wah Drum Corps, today her photo stands in the Chinese American Museum, Los Angeles. Once located in Chinatown, in the 1930's the club members attempted to use their achievements in drum corps as social capital in a land where discrimination was still accepted at the time.
Grateful to have been able to make this book as a memorial for her 90th birthday celebration.
